Founded more than 17 years ago by Apostle Tyrone Howell, Jr., Sword of the Spirit Church in Hurst, TX, is a powerful ministry. Dedicated to creating a whole person of society, Sword of the Spirit Church focuses on bringing the unsaved into the church. The Hurst, TX, congregation also helps those who have left the church find their way back into the fold and restore their spiritual being.

People leave the church for a range of reasons, including feeling other congregation members are hypocritical or feeling disillusioned with the current state of the church. Regardless, there are several things you can do to help someone returning to the church, and a few things you shouldn’t do:

Do extend an invitation.
According to research from LifeWay Research, the large majority of formerly churched people noted that a simple invitation from an acquaintance or friend would get them to return to church. This powerful method of helping someone return to the fold is often overlooked, particularly among younger congregation members.
Don’t attack them.
You may be able to easily see why your loved one pulled away from the church, but by no means should you attack them for it. Don’t make statements like “God is judging you” or “You’re going to hell.” Rather, be accepting of the reasons why your loved one strayed and stay non-judgmental.
Do trust God is active in their life.
Perhaps your loved one isn’t going to church every Sunday (or at all), but that doesn’t mean God isn’t working in their life. Trust that God is still active, and accept the idea that they found something that better worked for them in the meantime instead of fully straying from God.
Don’t take it personally.
When a loved one leaves the church, you may feel a little slighted. However, it’s important to not take it personally. Their decision to leave does not necessarily reflect on how much they value you as a person, your contributions, or the congregation as a whole.
